Ainslie Wills – Wednesday July 19 2017 at The Forum, Melbourne.
After setting up his shiny new big fuckoff 65” TV Kokomo stumbled across something called internet radio. And he discovered this Double J thing. It’s the older and fatter equivalent of Triple J but with decent music. Recently Tim Rogers hosted a week of “Liquid Lunch” and KoJo discovered Ainslie Wills. She’s just returned from the UK to do this show and another at H-W-L-R the following night. Her new single Running Second is class. If Uncle Tim and Cousin Koko both like something it’s gotta be good, right? As Grand Pappy Meldrum used to say, do yourself…
Queens of the Stone Age – Thursday July 20 2017 at Festival Hall, West Melbourne.
Last year Kokomo spend a few enlightening days in the Palm Desert, listening purely to the first three QOTSA albums. It felt like Josh Homme was speaking directly into his car and laying down truths, although this could’ve been the brownies talking. Kokomo feels his very life depends on being at this show, to look deeply into Homme’s eyes and see if what he knows to be is in fact true. And also want to sing the words to his favourite Queens’ song “Ko-Ko-Ko-Ko-Kokomo!”
Real Estate – Saturday July 22 2017 at the Croxton
Kokomo likes to justify going to every Splendour sideshow by adding up the costs of return flights to Byron, festival tickets, camping gear, etc. And then stating to all who’ll listen that he’s pretty much making money by staying in Melbourne. Plus he won’t have to drink XXXX mid-strength or whatever they all do up there as King of the North. Also….Winter Is Coming! Real Estate’s smooth grooves and viscous guitar lines always get a good going over in every room of the Jones household. Simultaneously on the surround sound Sonos every single Saturday Sabbath.
Charles Jenkins, and the Zhivagos, Sunday July 23 2017, 2pm show at Gasometer, Collingwood,
Kokomo has seen more than his fair share of Charles Jenkins shows since the Icecream Hands days. This show is notable for several reasons: It’s the launch of the prolific Melbourne songwriter’s latest classic The Last Polaroid. Local legend Davey Lane will be dispensing guitar spirals with all the ease that Uncle Tim dispenses windmills, and it’s an afternoon show so you can be home in bed making an early start on that hangover, tucked up and toasty by 7pm.
